The Peter Hand Trio

Peter Hand, Steve Johns, Harvie SJazz guitarist, composer and arranger Peter Hand returns to Alvin & Friends with his trio on Saturday, December 1st. With bassist Santi Debriano and drummer Steve Johns, the trio will perform a range of jazz standards, Latin and Brazilian jazz, R&B classic and original compositions, plus selections from Hand’s newly recorded big band album. Downbeat says “Hand’s guitar solos are tasteful and restrained throughout, showcasing his fluid style with vibrant runs and compelling conversation with his bandmates.”

Guitarist, composer and arranger Peter Hand has worked with many top artists and bands including Carmen Lundy, Jon Lucien, Houston Person, Lee Konitz, George Coleman, Don Braden, Claudio Roditi, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Chicago Jazz Orchestra, and Charleston Jazz Orchestra. He leads his own jazz combos and big band in New York, New Jersey and New England, playing the music of jazz greats Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and many others, as well as original compositions. His album, “Out Of Hand – The Peter Hand Big Band” (Savant Records), received stellar reviews and reached No. 4 on the JazzWeek Radio Chart of top 50 CDs, and he has just recorded a new album featuring rising star vocalist and saxophonist Camille Thurman on several numbers.

The son of a renowned Panamanian composer, Santi Debriano is one of the busiest jazz bassists in the New York area. He has worked with Don Pullen, Pharoah Sanders, Freddie Hubbard, Chucho Valdés, Larry Coryell and Randy Weston. As a member of the Archie Shepp Quartet he was featured on four albums, appearing in the documentary film Imagine the Sound, and spent three years with the Sam Rivers Trio. Debriano led a two-bass quintet, played Latin music as a member of the Panamaniacs, and leads Circlechant, a group that includes Brazilian pianist Helio Alves, Mos Def drummer Will Calhoun, and saxophonist Abraham Burton. Debriano was also the music director for arts at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, NJ, and received an award for jazz education from NYU.

Drummer Steve Johns is much in-demand for his masterful playing. He has worked and recorded with Nat Adderley, Lou Donaldson, the Vanguard Orchestra, Larry Coryell, Sonny Fortune, Benny Carter, Diane Schuur, Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell and many others. Steve was the drummer for NPR’s “Billy Taylor’s Jazz at The Kennedy Center”, recording 75 shows with guests including Wynton Marsalis, Nancy Wilson, Joe Lovano, Milt Jackson, Randy Brecker and Grover Washington. He is also leader on his own recordings and of his group – the Johns’ Jazz Quartet, featuring saxophonist Debbie Keefe Johns and jazz bass prodigy Daryl Johns.
