On Friday, December 22nd Julius Rodriguez returns to Alvin & Friends. A native of White Plains, Julius Rodriguez was already making a name for himself in the jazz world as a teen, hosting jam sessions at Smalls and headlining at Jazz at Lincoln Center. He was selected as a Young Arts National Finalist on both piano and drums, as well as a drummer in the Grammy Jazz Session and Next Generation Orchestra, a pianist at the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Workshop and a 4-Time NAACP ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics) National Medalist for instrumental music performance and music composition. Julius has shared the stage with many recognizable names including Javon Jackson, Andra Day, Wycliffe Gordon, James Morrison, Jazzmeia Horn, Dev Hynes, Roy Hargrove, Macy Gray, Wynton Marsalis, Nick Hakim, and more. He has performed at venues as varied as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington D.C., the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, and the Monterey Jazz Festival, as well as internationally in Japan and Australia. Currently Julius studies jazz piano at Juilliard.
Jazz pianist Leslie Pintchik, formerly a fixture at Larchmont’s late lamented Watercolor Café, is now appearing regularly twice a month at Alvin & Friends. On Saturday, December 23rd the Leslie Pintchik Trio returns to the main dining room with Leslie Pintchik on piano, Scott Hardy on bass, and Michael Sarin on drums. CDHotList.com says “Pianist and composer Leslie Pintchik is one of the finest bandleaders in the field of straight-ahead jazz right now, someone who not only writes with inventive wit and a keen melodic sense, but who also consistently draws the best out of her band members — and she plays piano like a combination of Bud Powell and Bill Evans, impressionistic without being arty, tunefully direct without being simplistic.” No cover charge, but tables in the main dining room are reserved for those ordering a meal and there is a two-drink minimum at the bar.
